well... all I can tell you is:

1) I feel no need to use a subwoofer with mine (I use an EICO HF-81 but would use Quad IIs in a minute if I had access to a pair). Mine are lacking their proper feet :-(

2) Mine are unrestored and are working fine, but they are certainly on borrowed time. Restoration is readily available but not inexpensive. Art Dudley reported on DIY renovation of ESL-57s in Stereophile (check their website). Plenty more ESL-57 info on the Planar forum here.
