The Quad ESL-57s built after about 1979 had a protection board, according to Gary Jacobson. It can be retrofitted.Quad recommended their model 306 amplifier (50 watts) for the old Quads, or the Quad 405 modified for a 50 watt limit. My owner's manual for the Quad 606 forbids its use with the old Quad ESL. So I wouldn't use anything bigger than a 306. I don't recall seeing a sensitivity rating anywhere, but I think it's relatively low. I seem to recall the loudness limit was about 95 dB PEAK, so they won't play super loud without damage.
