Hi Adrian-
I have 35 years of first hand experience with the original Quads. These speakers don't get very loud objectively-maybe 100db within a narrow band of 100Hz-5kHz or so- but they have great immediacy. It's that snap which contributes to the illusion that the Quad-57 is louder than it really is. If you try to enlarge Peter Walker's famous "window on the orchestra" the esl will sound strained & flattened just before the treble panel arcs. All Quad owners surely dread that experience because it is akin to a loss of innocence...& it's plenty expensive! The trick is to know how loud to play 'em in your listening room before trouble occurs. It is a worthy endeavor.
