Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Brings back memories!`

I loved DCM time windows. Didn't buy them at the time, as money was really tight, but of everything I auditioned in that era the TW came up on top for my ears - at least in the "affordable" ranges.

These days I bought Von Schweikert VR1s and they are really awesome. $975 retail, but you can often find B stock in excellent shape (just cosmetic imperfections in finish that most cannot even perceive) for around $7650-700. They really deliver on soundstage, imaging, detail, and remarkably low and excellent bass for a monitor. They mate well with both tubes and SS. In fact, the more expensive center channel version is even better when upended and used as a main speaker and goes even deeper (VSA recommends this use and it works extremely well). Their VR4 Jr.s are better still, if you want a full range floorstander.

Yes, big Maggies are a joy, but they are not perfect and they cost a morgue-full of arms and legs to boot. Plus they too have their flaws and don't do LF quite as well as you mihgt want for the cost.
