General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: DCM Time Windows

I owned a pair of original DCM Time Windows. I purchased them at an Audio Club on a military base in W. Germany after selling a pair of Magnepan MG IIi's that I had shipped with me from the states to a German National (I made a HUGE profit on the Magnepans). After returning stateside, I purchased a set of Mangpean MGIIa's (I missed the sonic qualities only a planar can delivery), but kept the Time Windows in a second stereo set-up for about 4 more years.

My impression is that they are open (in the sense that they portray a more realistic sound stage than the vast majority of conventional, box-type speakers), non-fatiguing sounding speakers whose weknesses are of omission rather than commission - that is, they are not the last word in accurate sound reproduction, but the sound they do produce isn't fundamentally screwed-up.

The best speakers of today are clearly superior to the Time Windows, in terms of:
1) high frequency clarity and extension,
2) the ability to resolve and differentiate complex passages, and
3) tighter, deeper bass.

The other side of the coin is that there continue to be many speakers available that do have notable sonic flaws and are thus fatiguing to listen to - that is, you are annoyed by the sound of the speaker which in turn interferes with the ability to simply listen to and enjoy the music.

So, are there better speakers out there today - Absolutely! Are there a lot of worse speakers out there today - Absolutely! You do own a pair of classics, if you wish to spend the time and money finding better speakers, you will be rewarded (I personally love the open sound of Magnepans, but not everyone likes planars). If you don't spend the time and effort, you could easily end up with speakers that are less satisfying than what you already have.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Gary
