They are used in a design known as Cross-Connected Belden 89259 Speaker Cable (Jon Risch) or The UBYTE-2 Speaker Cable (as on TNT, see the picture above). Both are exactly the same thing, just different ways of terminating it (and Jon Risch prefers Belden). They are very easy to make and I have heard a lot of good reports from the guys who built these.
