To answer your question, I'd recommend Ohm speakers. I'm not sure how much you have to spend, but their Walsh series speakers (I have the MicroWalsh) are very "involving."These speakers are very smooth - but not in a way that glosses over what's in the recording, smooth in the sense that there's no crossover in the midrange, the main driver handing off at around 8k. As a result there is none of that harshness that you referred to, which I hear in so many speakers these days. I've been a drummer for most of my life, and yes I've lost some hearing (I do wear earplugs) so if a speaker is bright to me (most are) then I hate to think what these designers have done to their hearing.
Anyway, these Ohms are very far from being harsh or bright, engaging the listener with details presented with a unique design instead of accentuating high frequencies to give the illusion of more detail, at the expense of tonal/timbre accuracy.
