I agree with you for the most part. Treat the room first than EQ if neccessary.Unfortunately, even tube traps aren't very effective under 80 Hz. One of my rooms has a 12 decibel room mode at ~55 Hz. Using EQ is the only way that I have found to get rid of this.
Have any of you read Meridian's whitepaper on this subject? They claim that EQ is only effective up to 250 Hz. After that it causes more problems than it solves.
