Maybe Cambridge Soundworks Model Sixes would fit the bill.
They are often on sale for something like $150/pr. I have
listened to them in the store and think that they are a
very good value. However, I do not know if they are shielded.
I kind of doubt it, but maybe the folks at CSW can tell you.
See www.hifi.com, and for a review see

They even look like they are from the same era as your receivers! At $150 there are few other choices, but I've seen people
recommend the partsexpress.com bookshelf speaker kit that goes for
something like $130. The cheap Polk R-series bookshelf speakers
also sound pretty good for the money, and are sold at
Circuit City which has a 30 or 45 day return policy so you
can try them out at home and see if you like them. CSW also has
a good return policy. Finally, some people like the Northridge
line of speakers from JBL. When I auditioned them I thought that
the sibilance on female voices was out of control, but that is just
me.Good luck, and do an in-home trial of whatever you buy.

Of course, if you can up the budget (or consider used) you will
have many more options.
