Hi Paul, it doesn't sound like any of the other replies bothered to answer your question-SONIC DIFFERENCES. My experience with metal plate is very limited because my amp is self biasing and the metal plates were turning cherry red but during the short time I had them in they were a bit sharper sounding than the run of the mill Valve Art's I had in at the time. The newer premium 845's will still give you that extra detail without the sharp edge that I heard in my system with the metal plates. Let me repeat that MY SYSTEM. Budget depending you can't go wrong with the Psvane Treasure series or WE 845's. Good luck, Will
