FINALLY back to SETs with WAVAC MD-805m monoamps

Purchased used, they're in excellent condition. First tube is a GE JAN-5751, driver is an RCA JAN 6Y6GT, and the 805 is a GE and not further labeled. Apparently these were the tubes supplied with the amps when new a couple years ago. I just received a new pair of JJ 5751s selected for low noise and low microfonics. Also received with the amps a pair of RCA 805/VT-143s stamped 'Mar 1943' which means they 11 months older than I am. These have been cryo'd by Kuhl-Tube; haven't yet installed these since no biasing instructions were included with the amps. (I've requested those instructions.)
For a $22K-RR pair of amps, build quality is decidedly...mixed. The top and front chassis plates are gorgeous machined and champagne-finished aluminum, while the painted-steel U-shaped bottom plates and transformer covers ring LOUDLY and sharply...but at least the bottom covers respond nicely to applications of strips of SoundCoat The Thicker. (I have more SC coming for the t-covers.)

I recall reading that a reviewer thought it nice that the inputs and outputs were on the top of the panel at the rear...

I think just the opposite, particularly the IEC power inlet. The latter, of course, causes the PC to be elevated into the same space the interconnect and speakercables occupy, NOT a good thing.

I'm currently driving my 87dB-(in)sensitive Vandersteen 5As with them, but today I borrowed a pair of inline hi-pass filters required by the 5As for correct frequency response, so tonite I'll be able to drive them to higher levels, so we'll hear what we hear. :-)
