Aren't we talking about amps that need additional gain in front and those that don't...if you put a passive in front of an amp with sufficient gain you will probably have a better chance of a positive result than placing a passive in front of an amp that needs some addition gain? On the converse, if you put gain in front of an amp that doesn't need it...
I can imagine why all these debates happen...everyone is talking apples and oranges...makes for fun discussion but it can confuse the folks looking for answers...maybe their asking the wrong questions??
