today i was playing my ess amt-4s with a push/pull 5881 amp that is rated at about 20wpc. just for snicks, i decided to hook up my james burgess 2A3 set amp just to see what they would sound like on the amt-4s, not expecting much.
i left the volume control on the preamp where it was with the 5881 amp. i expected the volume to be a lot lower with the 2A3 amp. wrong! the volume was actually louder with the 2A3 on the same preamp volume setting.
i am bewildered. common wisdom is that a 2A3 set amp will have a power rating of a couple of wpc while the push/pull 5881 should be at about 20 wpc.
the amt-4s are a 2-way with the heil tweeter and 10" jbl woofers. official efficiency ratings for them are hard to find, but they are considered only moderaely efficient. yet a 2-watt SET had no problem driving them to loud volume.
any insights?
thanks
