Hmmm - I could've sworn I posted a response to this. In any case, I'll try again: the 421A exhibits better section matching than just about any other pass tube available; its sonics are also a bit more consistent.
However, if you are fortunate enough to find a nice 5998 (and they do exist) the two sound virtually identical.
