If you can deal with 2 watts a channel, run the outputs as triodes, you can remove the NFB and go with a driver with higher transconductance, lower plate resistance and less gain. If you are looking to build a really nice sounding amp, replace the output iron and rework the power supply. Get rid of those old caps:)Eliminating the electrolytics in the PS will do wonders provided the rest of the amp is sound. Room under the chasis is a consideration. I mounted a pair of LL1663s on the back of the chasis because there was no room down under....IMHO tone control was used to cover for the lack of bandwidth...
I rebuilt a 1963 zenith power amp per the above suggestions. It will hold it's own with any amp of it's type.
