It is the engagement of the SET amp. I built an IT coupled PP EL84 amp that used a single ecc88 driver connected SE to the IT in an attempt to emulate the SET sound. I have tweeked on that amp for 3 years and it does sound really good..especially with a quad of Mullard el84s but it can't keep my attention like my IT coupled 50 monos. I have always assumed that it is the rich second order harmonics which the PP topology artfully eliminates in the output stage...They are just different flavors.
