I've experimented with SET guitar amps and BobbyJ is generally correct.However, I have had excellent results with Fender Champ-type circuits driving big triodes - 6SJ7 > 6V6 > GM70 - in other words, you're getting all of your tone/distortion *before* your signal hits the big triode.
Best results were obtained using an old Collins 5k:600 ohm line transformer between the 6V6 and the GM70.
NOTE: I'm going on memory here, the step-down ratio may have been completely different than I'm recalling at the moment - in any case, I don't consider the ratio critical. 845s or 211s should work similarly well.
