IMO, the sound quality of a tube amp will start to wain after about 10 years, if that amp has been regularly used. It is due to the aging of internal parts that is accelerated by heat. The Oto doesn't run particularly warm, but then again it is a very clear sounding amp, especially with speakers that deliver detail, where the aging factor will appear with noticeable lack of clarity.
I haven't noticed any aging with my Oto yet, but it is only 3 years old. When the sound does start to deteriorate, I will give it an overhaul to bring it back up to snuff. Of course if a person doesn't have the knowledge and ability, the work will have to be done by a tech.
If you decide to buy the 8 year old Oto, I suggest you give it a good overhaul or send it to someone who knows what they're doing with an Oto. The replacement of good quality parts won't come cheap either.
If you buy the new Oto, then you know that it is good for 8 to 10 years. Is there any chance of a transferable warantee on the new model?
I have no idea whether the new Oto has a better or worse cct. design. The schematic design is fairly simple; the strength of the Oto seems to be in the implementation of the circuit.
Seems like a no-brainer to me - for $750 extra I'd go with the new model.
With a quality item like the Oto, 8 to 10 years is a long time.
