Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

RE: Admiral 6BQ5 SE Amp!

Hey Sober1,

It's not likely that the OPTs on this amp are propoerly gapped if at all. They relied on gobs of NFB and tone control back then.

A 1963 Zenith SEP 6BQ5 amp made me fall for the single ended sound. It did have a 12ax7 as a driver. I ended up strapping the 6BQ5 as triodes and totaly rebuilding the power supply by adding a choke, tube regulation and recapping. I replaced the OPTs with a pair of Lundahl 1663s. It now uses a driver with less plate resistance and higher transconductance ie. ECC88 or 6922. The amp is one of my best overall performers but I can't help thinking that SEP done right could yeild some great results. A future project maybe.
