A lot depends on the mood - chilling out isn`t condusive to playing air-guitar, and the choice of music can often change my mood anyhow. Often I don`t flick through the CD racks looking for something to suit the way I`m feeling at that moment, it`s usually a case of seeing something that I`ve not played for a month or two and giving it a spin. Of Eva Cassidy, what you think of as `sugary`, I`d simply think of as sweet - it`s all a matter of taste at the end of the day - I don`t rate P J Harvey either. One of the criticisms leveled at SETs by friends who know of my possible interest is the accusation of being sugary/rose tinted etc, but just like hardness/harshness being attributed to solid state, I believe that it`s the cheaper/older/poorer designs which are responsible for both broad generalisations.I think you understood what I meant as far as the "sugary" comment but will just clarify in case. I just mean the delievery and production didnt have a lot of depth and substance to me... I didnt mean sugary in the sound sense. Perhaps you realized what I was saying. I shouldnt have used ole PJ Harvey as a good comparison since she is so totally opposite Eva Cassidy. PJ Harvey is definitely an amazing vocalist, however, and her first two albums are in a class of their own. She has a power that very few can match. Maybe a better comparison would be a Patricia Barbger or Diana Krall, although neither of those get my nod for the depth department. Take someone like a Sarah Vaughan and you have an interpretation that brings more depth to a number.
I dont usually bring out ye olde air guitar when listening to female vocalists anyway... The other day, I did have my real guitar out playing along with Guided By Voices... Wasnt on the SET, though....
