Vince loses skull cap: Hey, I'm on a roll here, so I might as well get all my wondering out of my system. Does anyone know of any SE designs using the EL84? Has anyone ever herard one? It is such a sweet little tube in PP I just can't help but think some of that sound would have to come across in an SE design. Yes? No?Vince, are you kidding here? Lordy. Dont even bring up ye ole Zen amp, or else loons from all corners will come with soldering irons on full setting, ready to brand you like a mule on 6th Street near those damn Indian restaurants...
Indeed, the most notorious of the mix is Decwares little ZEN amp, which is sold with the Svetlana SV83 tube in place of the EL-84 (EL84 cant be used as well). A neat little amp but much maligned in this area. Under $500 built so you can see the attraction. Ole Steve now has a SELECT version which adds about $200 and looks much better. On up and you can get the decked out monoblock version for some big $$$.
GO see: DECWARE ZEN TRIODE AMPS
ASUSA made the little K2003, which is a little EL84 SET that does not have tube rectification like the ZEN amp. The parts are not quite up to snuff either but very inexpensive. Looks neat in chome if that's your thing. A few have them on here, including the moderator (of he did have one I believe). Usually gets slightly less positive reviews than the ZEN offering. The bad thing about this company is I really believe they are going out of business once they sell their last amp.
There are actually a few more in the mix. One was just posted here awhile back but I cant remember the damn name or specifics. I can see the useless thing burning a hole in my retinas but that is all...Also, a few others messed with them as well...ie Gordon Rankin's "junior". AudioNote makes a parallel EL84 SET called the OTO I believe, which is still offered. No exposed tubes on this beast however, which ruins half the fun (not to mention the multiple tubes).
There are some more as well as schematics littered across the net...
Dont expect the sound of a 2A3, however. I do know of one instance of a loon selling his Wright WPA 3.5 2A3 Monoblocks in favor of his ZEN amp. True story.Who knows....
