Paul,
Chuckle all you want about spades. Here is a true story, happened in my apartment on my stereo.
I had a modified ARC D-52B, 50 watts per channel amp on my big seven-way Fulton speakers. I had Mr. Fulton and Bascom King visiting me, both gentlemen at the same time, Bascom with a final prototype of his Infinity switching amplifier. He wanted us to hear it.
I play a torture cut as the reference, an organ and a 100 piece mixed chorus, recorded very well, and my system pulls it off nicely. We switch to Bascom's amp, and were forced to use bananas. We play the same piece, at the same level, and the presentation sounds grossly STRIATED, distorted, lacking in lows, missing gross amounts of musical information.
When I lift the tonearm off the LP, Bascom is aghast and his color is somewhat pale. He was WAY COOL, says to us, "my amp has several times the power of yours, and it measures flat out to ?? 200 KHZ ?? (don't recall exact #), what is going on here"?? Mr. Fulton turns to him and says, "If you use bananas, you can not ever get that amplifier's performance to the speaker".
Bascom tells me my ARC has banana plugs on it, but I explain that I modified them, drilled them out, so I could use ring terminals and make a tight connection. "I don't think you want me to drill out you new amp's banana plugs to hear it here one time, do you Bascom" say I. Bascom says, "Oh no, please do so, and right now if you can".
I proceed with my drill, and we do a re-test. Now, the difference between the amps is 50% less on the choir and organ. Next we show Bascom how Jeff had rewired the B+ and grounds in the ARC amp, with 10 AWG Fulton Brown wire. He got the message through direct experience, and left my modest abode a changed man.
A second true story :
I did the same thing with my amplifier designer friend John Iverson, on organ music, with my Eagle 7A Mark 1 (his design) and his "improved" Eagle 7A Mark 2. We played his Mark 2 first on a truly great organ recording, and then switched to my amp. We were standing at the rear of the listening room, and when he heard my version of his design, the Mark 1, it played a full octave lower than his, with PROPER MUSICAL FORM. I watched his jaw drop from the corner of my eye, and I loved it. I showed him my internal wiring. John went away a changed man.
So, although these are "just stories", they are truthful ones. I respect you and your contributions, but I see a need for you to greatly improve your thinking (and doing) in the topics we are discussing. Its not just the low end, even though one may get that impression, but its an improvement in the entire audio spectrum Paul. You ought to get proper wire and connectors installed, so you can hear it right in this lifetime, before you pass on.
Respectfully submitted,
Jeff Medwin
