Re: Fixed Bias amps really do sound more detailed then Cathode Bias?

You may have prefer the fixed bias sound from the Cary (as I think what you heard should have been with fixed bias). It usually sounds more dynamic and more detailled (though one can find the sound more edgy) than auto-biasing through a cathode resitor (like what you have with the Moondogs). If this is the case, IMHO no tube rolling will change Milkman Dan's mood, no interconnect changes, no nothing...

Hmmm, this is a very interesting idea here and one I had not really thought of. Would be interested to hear others opinions on this.

My EICO HF-81 is cathode biased as well and I love the sound and even find it exhibiting amazing resolution easily bettering the other EL-34 amps I have on hand, both of which are fixed bias. But I do vaguely remember reading something about this in the past.

Milkman Dan aside, I just got a huge change in sound by substituting one 6SN7 in the stage nearer the Sovtek 2A3. I did have the stock JAN Philips 6SN7WGTA but I removed a RCA red dot 5692 and the sound became much more lush with an improvement to the midrange, although the bass and treble were slightly softened. Seemed, strangely enough, to play LOUDER, however.

Once again, speaker wire should definitely be simple, that is one thing I found out. The 75 cents worth of Radio Shack 18AWG solid core killed the $1200 worth of Transparent Audio wire. I actually have the damn garden interconnects that came with an old Nakamichi tape deck in use! Sadly enough, it sounds better than the Transparent via the Moondog!

Still trying to sort things out. Looking into a possible journey down the homemade TQWP speaker path but might just up and purchase a pair of Ed Schilling's The Horn speakers if I can brave the modest cash outlay. Read that the Fostex drivers do better with the 2A3 (over the modified RAdio Shack).

Who knows what will end up happening. Was enjoying them more but want the jaw dropping magic I so desired...the magic NANCY needs!
