Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

So, the milkfloat got hocked to fund a moondog to gaurd your audio gold huh milkman...

I've seen the other posts, and well, no wonder you're not a happy man.

The moondog is a fab product... excellently executed - as are the proacs (SET friendly too), I would suspect that the Great Finger should be pointed at the lowly creek...

I have been through the pre/power spincycle too many times..... It clouds the judgement some, so heres' what I've learned (it kinda makes sense to me)

Passive preamps are great for SS, ok for PP but not SET - too many cable interfaces, capacitances, inductances monkeying around with that poor old signal - making phase shifts a plenty - this combined with the lowish input impedance of the SET, and the additional phase changes in the 'dogs (including the output transformer) will be robbing you blind of the magic.

Why? the answer is in the SS driver in the Rega and your (valve I presume)phono stage. They cannot effectively drive the highly reactive load presented by the passive pre and cables into the low(ish) input impedance presented by the 'dogs, and so need a helping hand. I would suggest that you try to 'borrow' something like a Croft Vitale - a nice simple active pre that has a wonderful sound (and shouldn't cost megabucks, pure SE too, to boot!) to see what difference that extra help can make - then take a quick squint at the net - there are many similar designs out there, including Thorstens incredible 'euridice'.

And breathe, Relax.

You should have seen the therapy bill to be able to say that...

As always, YMMV, just get a good charge.

Good luck

Owen
