...And the damn thing has the MagneQuests as well! You see, I have been listening to tube amps for quite a while, and I basically was exposed to SET sound 10 years ago..and it changed my ENTIRE view of music reproduction. I thought I knew what was up and the time spent with the original Cary 300se made my jaw drop and mind shift, never to be exactly the same (and this was before the big SET exodus in the US).
The musicality of that original exposure just took me to another dimension, a dimension I have been trying to picture ever since. The music floated, swirled, and was so palpable and alive, I just couldnt believe it. The strange 8 watt amps were doing things I had never heard before but at a live performance. It is cliche to talk of this now, but back then, I used to attempt to explain it to people and most would just politely nod and smile.
Well, I finally was in the position to get a SET amp after all these years. I have had a number of PP amps cycle through, from other Cary gear to ASUSA, Jolida, and my favorite, the EICO HF-81 (the EICO walked all over the others).
These Moondogs are some of the originals and have Audio Note oil caps along with a handful of Solens and ELNAs in PS. Even has Audio Note resistors.
What is missing? Well, they have damn good bass for a SET amp. What is missing is the typical things you EXPECT in a fine set amp, namely the things I mentioned above. It just doesnt sound as transparent and seperated as it should. I am using a Creek passive and a modified Cary SLP-70 for preamp duties. Source is a Rega Planet and Linn LP-12/Basik Plus/Bluepoint. I was wanting great separation between instuments and it seems more homogenized than it should. The sound has a slightly unfocused bent to it that is troubling. This is not volume related either. I was expecting VIVID and alive, eveloping sound and seem to be stuck in this lack of magic, OK, pretty damn good but where is the magic hell. I know speaker matching is essential with SETs and that the 8 watt Carys (which were played through these speakers) are a far cry from the 3.5 watt Moondogs. But I think I should be getting better sound from this combo... I dont think this is all matching here but know it has something to do with it.
Sonny Rollins Way out West sounds too small and lacks the body it should. Basically, I am stuck admiring a free certified audiophile approved boneskull recordings to get some of the feeling of what these 2A3 amps can do. I am currently listening to Art Pepper on my EICO in the second system and feeling more myself. I dont dare put on the Pussy Galore or Butthole Surfers....
...Lord...not Ebay again....
