Hi Paul,I don't know about this effect; it is probably possible to design a circuit like that.
When using a triode to drive a triode, we overemphasize the "triode-type" distortion. Using a pentode to drive triode, we introduce the pentode-type distortion, but the triode distortion is not over-emphasized.
Probably it all boils down to individual cases, certain tubes match well, and others do not. I think distortion might not be the greatest matching issue, probably current drive and impedance matching plays a greater role - however, when those are not optimal, you get distortion, so we are back at the distortion issue. But it might be a result, not the causative issue.Janos
