"I have not heard the Yamo, and I'm sure there are other things it has perhaps also to make it good, but I would not buy any stock in it."I have owned many very good amplifiers (many of them low powered SET) and have learned through personal experience not to discount something that I have not heard. I was convinced that this particular Yamamoto amplifier would act as a backup to my highly respected and very well designed Wavelength Audio PF 45 based single ended amplifier that had recently required repair. I was wrong!
Next week I may hear a 6bq5 (I love this tube) or a "Jfet" based amplifier ,single ended or not, that sounds better to me. I no longer trust the hype or even quasi science dictating why one audio product SHOULD sound better. I have been humbled and have eaten lots of crow because of this attitude. No way that DC filament heating the 45 tube can compare sonically with AC heating, that's what I strongly felt. Try to get a dealer to loan you the A-08S. I would love to see/hear if you are as stunned as I was.
Keep in mind that I did not believe that the First watt F-1 and F-2 would compete sonically with my new A-08S. So, I tried them, and in my opinion I was right, they did not. I felt the same lack of enthusiasm for the F-3 and it's new found trust in J-fets for power amplification (high end anyway). Turns out this time I'm wrong. But, I listen prior to publicly stating a definate opinion. You know, the crow eating thing that I am continuing to learn the hard way.
