But what everyone says about this stuff, when they talk about something that I can understand, I store the information in my mind and I try to come to terms with it at some point. I look for integration or synthesis in what everyone has observed.
I think all this discussion is important and that we should not shortchange any aspect of it. TJ, Svetlana, and even the EH tube, tubes that I have heard, offer somethings that the WE tube does not have. Those aspects of sound: openness, dimensionality, stuff like that, interest me. No tube does it all.
That was an issue I tackled in the past but I cannot say that that door will stay shut.
I'm sure you find this stuff fun. Any understanding that we get can really be a fun type of challenge. We are all involved in different interesting aspects of it.
For example, I'm preparing to try to get an understanding now of pentode versus DHT drivers. I couldn't mentally do that challenge today. I mean I could but I'm not ready and it would short change it if I did it today. I guess it is a slow gradual movement towards an understanding, and maybe there is some type of mental meandering in the prestage. And then one of these days will come along perhaps in the next few months when I am ready and then kind of get the understanding.
My friend John who builds amps is more of a private person. But he shares with me some of the wonderful creative processes involved in building amps.
We do become more and more subjective perhaps as we move along. Because I think that what matters more perhaps is to stay with something that really matters to us. Stay with a sound that we really enjoy, that is important to us in some way. That is even vital to us in a way because sound it turns out, is a very interesting phenomena.
So I have cast aside the WE 300b tube, but certainly not their vintage stuff. I have cast aside DC on the filaments, cast aside recently IHT as the best drivers, cast aside at least some of the current opts, cast aside most of my interest in nonsets.
