Re: What are the trade offs with higher powered SETs?

You are right Thorsten. I shouldn't have generalized so much. Low power SETs can indeed do lowish bass with the right speaker. I had Khorns sounding pretty darn good with some very low power SETs. But I've never heard a low power SETs do 20-40hz well.

I had Edgars Siesmic horn sub and it required more than the low power SETs could muster. I didn't try a 300B amp though. That may have worked. But again, the speaker system got too complicated and compromised for my taste. I prefer, like you seem to, a simpler speaker system.

I consider full-range 20hz-20kz. Getting that range from a single low power SET amp and a "simple" speaker system without time delay or path-length problems is a tough one.

I really like complete and cohesive sound I hear from one high power SET amp driving a truly full-range speaker with little of those time delay issues.

indeed any other other high quality amplifier) is wasted on most
low efficiency speakers anyway. Few have the low level resolution to show much and they almost invariably compress heavily.

Agreed 100%
