The most important word PJ used is "educate". Make this into an enjoyable learning experience. Don't worry about analysis paralysis, get out to some local meetings, go to some shows, and find out who near you has gear to listen to. Everybody loves to show off their system and AA makes it easy to hook up with someone in your general area. The guys who are preaching a certain amp or system are just telling you what they like. They can't tell you what you like, and neither can you without as much exposure to as much gear as possible. I had some fun years ago when AA had just started up. People were telling someone "amp A" was the best SE they had ever heard, etc. I listed how many different SE amps I had actually listened to, I dunno, maybe 30-40-50? Some of those giving the most emphatic recommendations had listened to one.
Mostly remember, it's just a hobby! Don't think that you aren't allowed to have fun or make a few mistakes along the way. We just spent some money on a speaker project that was, in the end, deemed a failure sonically. But we learned information that was of far more value than the cost of the project. People who worry strictly about resale value, or some vague standard of sonic perfection, or what the neighbors think can miss out on a lot of valuable investments in knowledge acquisition.
