Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

Do both.

Do both.

"I realize that we must consider both speakers and amp in this discussion"

That's right! I was where you are two years ago. I had my beloved B&W Nautalis 805's and drove them with a Naim Nap 250/72/Hicap. Got hold of an old Eico HF-86, EL-84 output amplifier at 16 watts. I sold my Naim stuff within months. I wanted to try the single ended thing so ordered myself a pair of Antique Sound Labs AQ 1006 DT amplifiers at 22 watts SET. These amps had no problem driving the B&W's and would likely have no problem driving your current speakers. BUT, several members on this forum kept telling me that I was not hearing the magic that SET sytems are capable of when using my 89 dB 1 watt speakers. I must admit to arguing that they were wrong because I was able to garner prlenty of volume with 22 SET watts through my 805's. Out of curiosity I purchased a pair of Fostex 206e drivers and put them in a simple box, WoW!. Granted, these are fullrange drivers, but the differnce in speed, dynamics, clarity, detail, and sheer transparency was shocking. My B&W N 805's now look and work great as home theater speakers.
I had to return my ASL amps for service and had a chance to try a pair of 45 based SET amps at home while awaiting the ASL's return.
I was stunned by the increase of palpability (life) when compared with my 22 watt 845 based amplifiers. So, now I have finally learned my lesson. I use 2 watt SET amps to drive a pair of Lowther DX-4's and still cannot believe the sense of realism wrought by the combination. I happen to have purchased a pair of Wavelenght Gemini PF amplifiers, but, am also condidering building a pair of Welborne DRD 45 amplifiers with silver output transformers to see/hear if the MUCH less expensive kits will compare sonically.
So, do it right to begin with. Buy 45 based kit SET amps and very high efficiency speakers of your choice. Just my opinion, but, learned the hard way. Thanks to many members of this forum for strongly leading me in the right direction.
