Re: Where is the SET Magic??

I see the N805 owners manual is available on the web, so I checked it out. Two items jumped out at me:

1) Nominal 8 ohms, but minimum 4.6 ohms. That's a moderately low impedance dip, but not terrible. Since most SET amps have a damping factor of 2 to 4, impedance dips can make life difficult for them. It is worth trying the 4 ohm tap, if one is available.

2) The specified maximum driving impedance is 0.2 ohms (for speaker cable). You'll not get that low an impedance from any non-feedback amp. Again, a lower impedance tap on the output transformer will reduce the effective driving impedance, bringing the performance closer to the B&W design intention.

Since most of the impedance fluctuations are usually in the bass, you might be able to improve things with a change in room positioning. THe ideal room position with a low impedance amp is likely different from the ideal position with a higher-impedance amp.
