I think you've hit the nail on the head, with the remark "...expectations may have been too high...". Perhaps they were not too high, so much as in a different direction than the reality. Almost always in my experience, the "magic" in something is not where I expected it, but in another direction entirely. You mentioned "...clarity not heard from any other amplifier..." - is that not magic?After you get used to the sound (a week a month, whatever) try going back to what you had before, to see the difference from another perspective.
