I bought some 801a's probably a decade ago and I've always wanted to try them in an amp. I have some Electraprint 8k OPTs. I'm looking for ideas in terms of the driver. I've seen some posts on an EL84, which sounds interesting. Not opposed to a 417a, 5687, etc. I like the idea of a two stage amp and no IT. Seems like some have had good luck with slightly starved filaments, and clearly DC it must be. I'd like to stay in the 480v B+ range, and maybe use one fil supply and fixed bias to compensate for the lower B+?? Anyway, just thought I'd toss this out and see if there are any suggestions from those who have built with this tube. And yes, I searched some old posts, but most seem to be "look what I built" - I'd like to think instead of what might I build? Oh, and a reasonably small footprint (10x17??). Not looking for a multi chassis, 300 lb approach.
