My first "commercial" SET experience was an AES 300B driving Maggie 3.X (I forget the model #). I was auditioning (for purchase) the AES at the owner's home and wanted to get an idea of how the unit sounded in his main system. Otherwise he was driving the Maggies with Quicksilver KT88's. That audition turned out to be one of the most memorable, dramatic audio experiences of my life. The musicians and music crystallized in that room in a manner unlike anything I'd ever heard. I didn't buy the amp--he wanted too much $$$ for a second hand unit--but within obvious power limitations, the AES drove the Maggies with aplomb. Can't say whether I coulda lived with that system--an hour or so audition isn't sufficient to tell. And like you, I now own Lowthers and generally agree with your assessments. But Maggies and "SET magic" are not mutually exclusive terms in my experience.
