"Ideally, I’d like to maintain the 300B magic (three dimensionality, tone, texture, musicality) but without too great a sacrifice of bass weight and control (I want to avoid it being too “tubeyâ€, euphonic, woolly, syrupy etc.)"
Throw a little feedback in, just don't tell anybody who listens to the amp.
1. Tube complement
- 300B, 5687, 12AU7 (e.g., Ayon Audio) ok
- 300B, 5687, 12AV7 (e.g., Silbatone) good
- 300B, 6SN7, 6DJ8 (e.g., Prestige Audio) ok
- 300B, 6SN7, 6J5 (e.g., DIY design) depends on implementation
- 300B, 6SN7, 6SL7 (e.g., Cayin Audio) stupid, too much gain
- 300B, 6SN7, 12AT7 (e.g., Tonewin) somewhat like above
- 300B, 12BH7A, 12AU7A (e.g., Air Tight) good, 12BH7 is nice
2. Chokes - yes, you'll regret it if you don't.
3. Headphone jack
If you want to use headphones, you will almost certainly need to implement a DC filament supply, and this adds one more choke per channel to do it right. Standard series resistance is 120 ohms per channel to the positive terminal of each headphone driver.
