Scorpio, hi. Not inherently noisy. I have home brew 2A3 and 45 SET amps among others that are very very quiet. The 2A3 has a little more self noise as it has two tube stages before final, but you have to put your ear almost on top of a driver to detect it. The 45 amp has only one tube stage before final. Many factors go into noise: circuit itself, wiring practice and layout, how signal is brought in to grid of first tube, grounding, and so forth. Sometimes it is necessary to use DC on filaments although this would be viewed as blatant heresy by some. The noise I find most obnoxious is always related to some signature of alternating current. Don't give up on SET because of your first experiences.
