I've only only used Rca engraved base ST 45's. With my ed schilling horn they are wonderful. My 2a3 is the sovtek which is has a firmer but less clear bass , and seems less liquid than the NOS 45's. The RCa's can be had for about 75 each. I've been tempted by meshplates, but my new room discourages the use of the 45. Of course you should use the 5y3 as rectifier with the 45.
FWIW, my fi is a pre -X, so it is a traditional stereo chasis(black), and runs tubes in the upright position - Same circuit as the X.Pete
