Are you using a preamp with the Carys? Sounds to me as if your system doesn't encorporate enough overall gain. SET systems are easy to misconfigure. With the idea that simpler is better, lots of folks try to run a CD player directly into an SET and get a dry, undynamic sound. Having said that, Cary amps are notably softer in tone than others, so maybe you do want to investigate another amp.
