Another twopence-worth:I consider that the reported phenomenon of greater dynamics with smaller valves can most likely be attributed to a certain amount of cheese-paring in the power-supply department by those who build larger amplifiers. A proper power supply is expensive and very heavy.
If the amplifier is truly Class A then this is obviously not an issue, but with an amplifier that is a bit more marginal, on programme material that makes real demands - i.e. has a large dynamic range - then demand can very easily outstrip supply with the resultant compression.For instance, I am presently planning a 2 x 15W tweeter amplifier. It will probably weigh about 40lbs....
Don't ask about the planned bass and midrange units....
