The 46 has a lighter, sweeter, faster sound, as well as a more forward midrange and less apparent bass extension. The 45 is "cooler", more laid back, more even-handed. I've tried both as drivers in 300B circuits, and I always ended up preferring the 46. They are cheap and cheerful, as the saying goes. A 46 SE amp is a fun little circuit. They also run at lower current and need less drive voltage. And they are tough little buggers--look at the maximum plate dissipation...
