I didn't really _do_ anything to make it sound great, the conversion to SET seemed to make all the difference. The only tweaking I've done is changing the load impedence of the 6550 and mucked around with hum minimisation.
It has an ECC88 mu-follower driver and the 6550 is cathode biased at about -25v with plate voltage of 300v. All bypass caps are cheapy electros and they still aren't bypassed with polyproylenes or anything like that. The 6550 is loaded with the 3.5k P-P output transformer between one of the plate connectors and the opposite screen tap, giving something like 2k on the 500 ohm plate resistance. This gives excellent balance with my speakers which are described (along with my planned 300B amp) at the following link.
I know using a PP transformer to load a SE configuration is a big no-no but this still sounds great and I look forward to getting a transformer suited to SET.http://users.bigpond.com/scott_and_meagan/scott
