Mark,My biggest problem with the 2A3 is that they vary so much from the norm. I have 45 different types here that I have collected over the years. They vary up to 45% from the SP TungSols I have to the new hybrid SP plates and then there are the bi-plates (really dislike).
Ok... old single plates are great, but vary different in specifications. Most old SP plates have Rp (plate resistence) of 1K or more at 60ma/250V's. Also their input capacitence is like 1/4 that of bi-plates. I have found best results for these are 5K trannies at 50ma and less than 300V's. Save them if you got them.
Bi-plates, the problem here is fatigue. Kelly I know... On transients one of the two tubes inside takes over the other and results in poor response. This is why it is hard to get much more than 3.5W's even though the design is basically 2 45's in parallel.
The new hybrids of the 2A3's single plates from AVVT, KR and Sovtek are all nice but do lack that magical midrange that the older tubes have. They don't tend to draw you in as well. This is even somewhat true of the VV45 but not as much for some reason.
Anyway... best bet is try them out yourself!
