Mark,I hate to say this but I agree with Jim Ricketts. It is usually more the circuit than the tube.
Take for instance running a 45 on DC or AC heaters. On AC the 45 has some of the best midrange possible. On DC the 45 has a little more guts but is way too dry.
So here we are talking about only one facite of the design. Really it is more the circuit than the tube. Take the 2A3 not my fav... though I have built and designed many of amps that people enjoy to me it does nothing for me.
Take a look at the circuit, iron, parts and even the who is giving the information to draw your conclusions.
