Bunnymen make my top 5 favorite bands of that period. I'll search it out. Did you pick up their release from '01, "Flowers", I'd describe it in much the same way you describe "Evergreen", Ian really seems to have aged gracefully.A friend of mine absolutely swears by the Bunnymen album sans McCulloch, "Reverberation", have you heard it? I've not, but I'm really curious about it too. My friend claims that Will Sargeant never sounded better.
Related brush with greatness: Saw Bunnymen when they toured in support of Ocean Rain, me and a couple of friends had the bright idea to track the band down at their hotel the day of the show and see if they would come to the lobby and have a drink, we somehow got on the phone with McCulloch and he agreed to meet us for a drink. So we had a sandwich a couple of beers and shot the sh*t for an hour or so. I remember mentioning, feigning knowing what the hell I was talking about, that Ocean Rain was really good and that it sounded like the vocals were mixed higher than on previous Bunnymen albums...he liked that, half jokingly said something like "about time, don't you think". At one point some teenage girls 14 or 15 years old were hovering around, they knew who he was and worked up the nerve to approach the table, asked him for his autograph, and took a picture. They were absolutely thrilled. Asked us if we were in the band. :-) I was really surprised that their audience would have reached that age group. Too bad the girls couldn't see the show...age restricted club.
Ah, the memories of a mis-spent youth.
