Oh ho ho. 35 years ago, with "I Ain't Trippin'," Too $hort didn't just put west coast hip hop on the map. He didn't just put Oakland on the map. But he actually repped East Oakland. He actually differentiated "the hill" from the "flatlands."
"I Ain't Trippin'" mentions 98th Avenue. If you keep going up 98th Avenue, you'll hit Bishop O'Dowd and the Oakland Zoo. I now work one exit away from the zoo. Although she's now at UCSB, my goddaughter grew up in East Oakland. But for me, it all started with Too $hort's "I Ain't Trippin'."
