"It's amazing," wrote an Inmate, "I was in junior high (it went to 9th grade then) when The Lovin' Spoonful's 'You Didn't Have To Be So Nice' appeared. My [older] sister loved bouncing around to it. She wanted me to join in, but I was 'too cool' for that."
"It's amazing that 'You Didn't Have To Be So Nice' then became well known to you, then to my Millennial kids, then to your Gen Z kids. In time, it'll become well known to Gen Alpha kids."
When UC Santa Cruz, my alma mater, opened in the mid-60s, the inaugural classes no doubt listened to "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice." Thanks to a Central CA "Oldies" radio station, my generation, in the early-90s, got to enjoy it. Too bad that when we were on the Great Meadow (pictured above), our Walkmen (as opposed to car radios, home stereo tuners, and some boomboxes) couldn't quite receive that Oldies station cleanly. Still, we all knew the song well. It turned us all into wannabe hippies.
Founded in New York City, The Lovin' Spoonful, in 2000, were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
