When we were growing up in the 80s, our parents liked Petula Clark. Even without our parents' influence, we liked her. However, Bay Area radio stations hardly ever played anything from her. Once in a blue moon, KFRC might play Clark's "Downtown."
When I was at UC Santa Cruz in the early-90s, there was an excellent "Oldies" FM station, possibly based in Soledad. That station did indeed play Petula Clark, and not just "Downtown." Thing was, our Walkmen couldn't quite pull in that station. It was only via car stereo or home audio tuner, that we could listen cleanly to that station.
Regardless of her mood, my friend Tracy, whenever hearing Clark's "My Love," perked up, and got all bouncy. When Tracy would do her stilted and jittery dance moves, well, they weren't far off from Petula Clark's performances.
And no, "My Love," which is now 55 years-old, still isn't heard, via Bay Area radio stations.
