Megadeth, "Disconnect"

My whole life, we had always been split, into men's and women's locker rooms. But then in 2000, I started to play ice hockey. Instead of separate men's and women's locker rooms, the rinks had lots of tiny locker rooms, one for each team. But what if your team was coed?

These tiny locker rooms might have just one toilet and two showers. Your coed team better figure it out, or just not get naked at all. Indeed, most players never removed her panties and sports bra, or his briefs. Just shower at home.

But some teams have the oblivious husband and wife, who shower together. One of my teams had a middle-aged mom and her college-aged daughter, both of whom just liked to, um, let it all hang out. If your teammates are new to each other, there could be an awkward disconnect.

If you have played hockey, the pads cover most of your body. Inevitably, the puck seems to find the spots, where there isn't padding. That's usually the inside of the elbows, or behind your knees. One time, my defense partner was jostling in front of our own net. The other team fired a laser, which hit my partner on the inside of her right elbow. Her arm went numb, and felt like it fell off. But she kept playing. It wasn't until the game was over, and we were changing in the locker room, when she removed her elbow pad, and discovered that she had a huge bruise.

You know what, though? It was via my hockey teammates, that we discovered Megadeth's then new album, The World Needs A Hero . The leadoff track, "Disconnect" featured one of 2001's best riffs.

At the next week's game, my teammate showed off her elbow. The bruise spread and dissipated. Interestingly, the spot where the puck hit her elbow was now free from bruising.

It's hard to believe that Megadeth's "Disconnect" is now 20 years-old. We are almost to the point where we are the middle-aged parents, with kids in college. But we still love that riff!
