Saraya, "When You See Me Again"

"If it weren't for you," emailed an Inmate, "Maybe I don't learn about all this rock music, certainly not Saraya. And to think, it all started with that letter of yours."

He was referring to a Letter To The Editor I wrote, which appeared in the July 1992 Stereophile. Since most people listened to popular music, it made sense, for "professional" reviewers to learn about popular music, and incorporate it in their reviews. Sigh, the February 1992 "Records To Die For" was awful, so I banged out that letter, on an electric typewriter. Had to lick a stamp, and snail mail the letter to Stereophile.

The Inmate continued, "I reached out to you in 1998 or so. In some ways, I can't believe you're the same guy who wrote that, and that I've known you for over 20 years. But then again, in all those years, you've been nothing but top-notch, so maybe I'm not surprised that you're the same guy."

If the band Saraya weren't all that well-known, the small army of fans is passionate. For those who know, Sandi Saraya was one of the best female rock vocalists. On their second album, When The Blackbird Sings , Sandi soars. Many of the songs deal with heartache and breakups, and Sandi just lights the torch.

For this album, Queensryche's producer worked with Saraya. The recording process was painful for the band, who just wanted to have fun playing music. Alt rock was in vogue, and When The Blackbird Sings remained pretty unknown. The band broke up, and the cult following has, for decades, clamored to have Sandi resurrect the band.

My personal favorite of the album has always been "When You See Me Again." Here, Sandi still has a burning desire for an ex. The Inmate above likes to joke, "Well, if I never had anyone to begin with, then an ex doesn't exist! But the song is so powerful, you still feel the burn."

This is now 30 years-old, and the Inmate asked, "How old were you then?"

When the album came out in Spring 1991, I had just turned 19. But my friends knew back then, that "When You See Me Again" was a keeper, which would impact us decades from then. For our wedding banquet, my wife wanted some Saraya. As much as she loved "When You See Me Again," it was a breakup song. Instead, she chose Saraya's power ballad, "Timeless Love." Nevertheless, now our 12-year-old daughter perks up, when "When You See Me Again" plays, and passionately sings along.

"Oh cool," emailed the Inmate, "You rock music audiophiles are breeding, and raising the next generation!"
